This article explains the idea behind SOAR, the Society of Active Retirees. Sponsored by Wayne State University, the initiative provides educational courses for adults 50 and older. Most courses are offered at the Oakland Center. Martin Herman, a retired WSU humanities professor who teaches a course on "Detroit Experiencing Opera," said he enjoys "sharing what I know with friends, former colleagues and people in the community."
